Character’s Background: Mai had grown up all her life in an orphanage. Her mother had died giving birth to her and father, who had abandoned her mom, ran off to God knows where. She sure didn't. Though, it wasn't a concern to her.
She had never really made friends either. Always being alone but forever thinking herself popular. She figured she was so popular that everyone was too nervous to approach her. She even blamed her " popularity and beauty " for not being adopted. The owners of the orphanage had watched her grow up and behave in such a way, believing it be her way to shield herself from the sad truth; that no one liked her.
One Christmas, when she was 14, the owners of the orphanage (her primary caretakers) bought her a rather expensive camera. They feared that she would never experience a Christmas with a family of her own and chipped in for it. After this day, photography became her life. Taking pictures of things she deemed to be just as beautiful as herself.
She had always wandered around her orphanage during the Dark Hour but never understood what it was. She had tried to take pictures but nothing came of that and nobody believed her stories. Eventually she began to believe the Dark Hour was made for her. A place where everything, in comparison to her, was incredibly less beautiful was heaven in her eyes.
Though she does seem dysfunctional, she does have reason behind her actions. However, the reason behind it is shrouded in mystery and locked away in her heart and her mind.
Character’s Personality: Mai, although pretty, believes she is of incomparable beauty and popularity. She even believes that every man she comes across, no matter what age, is in love with her. Though she is flattered (by her own imagination/misunderstandings) she will turn them all down. It seems like arrogance at some times but it's more like she's in her own world. Most of the time she hardly realizes she's being egotistical. She's also not very bright and some would even call her air-headed. Though, even if her misunderstandings are troublesome, she has a great outlook on life and is never one to let things get her down (mostly because she's oblivious to everything negative thrown at her).
Also, she has the habit of nicknaming everyone she meets. The names are never really anything one wishes to be called.
